"As if my happiness has anything to do with it. If I liked them, our parents would have ordered us to break up. And we would have had to, because they said so." She said. "I'm sorry. I'm sure that hurts."

"Even if it benefited the familes for you two to like each other? Well that is a very odd system." Delvin said.
He frowned and shrugged.
"Could be worse. She is happy now at least, husband, kid and all." he said. There was a slight bit of bitterness in his voice, but he was truely happy for the girl as long as she was happy for herself. He would have never brought her happiness, he knew and had excepted that.

"If it benefitted the families, then we wouldn't like each other. Don't you know anything about girls?" She asked. "We dont' like the people we should like. We don't love the right people and most often ignore decent guys and fall for jackasses."
She nodded solemnly at the married with kids comment.
"I suppose if you really loved her, you're happy for her." She said. "But I'm sure that it still hurts."

"That explains a lot." Delvin said. "How many jackasses have you fallen for?"
Again, Delvin just shrugged.
"Even if it did, what would it matter? Can't change anything." Delvin said. He tried to make his voice indicate that he was done talking on the matter.

Athena rolled her eyes.
"None, because I"m a good little girl who does what her parents tell her to do." She said. That was a lie. But she knew he was a jackass and she didn't really like him as a person. She didn't know why she loved him, but she did. And it kinda hurt.
"What do you do for a living?" She asked. He was older than her, she could tell that. So she figured that he must have a job. He was a grandpa after all.

"Somehow, i just don't believe that." Delvin said, he wanted to push and ask who the guy was but he knew it wasn't a good idea.
"Uh... Depends on the week. Right now I'm fixing up one of the cabin's for my friend." Delvin said. He had never been able to keep a good job.

"I tried my hand at that once. I almost lost my hand." She said. "I'd rather not ever do that again. So, if you switch jobs all the time, what's your favorite one so far?"

"You obvioulsy were a horrible student, or had a horrible teacher." Delvin said. "My favorite? Working with wood, I guess. But not carpentry working with wood, more buliding. Almost like contracting."

She smiled a bit.
"That something that every town needs, so why are you complaining about being out of work?" She asked. "Contractors are needed everywhere, since places keep being built. And I was not a horrible student. Just talentless, luckless, and clumsy. And so was the person working with me."

"Not around here. Most do things for themselves. We already have a contractor anyway. And he hates me." Delvin said. "Again, bad teacher. Anyone can get over that, if they have the right teacher."

"So clumsiness is because I've never been taught right? Well alleluia. If only someone could teach me how to walk in a straight line and not trip over things. Because apparently I can only walk normally when annoyed or scared." She said. "And eventually the other guy has to die. Then you can take over. Maybe you could help the process along...."

"Walking straight? That would take a much different teacher. You do tend to stumble a lot, that could be from lack of food though." Delvin mumbled. "No, He is a good man, he doesn't deserve that."

She rolled her eyes.
"For the last time, I'm not hungry and I don't need to eat. The ground stopped spinning hours ago. I'm fine after that." She said. "Stop ragging me on it. I already have a monkey on my back, don't be another one. And fine. Be jobless. Just remember that you could have had a job had you taken my suggestion."

"I'll stop nagging you, when a) you walk across the river that is up ahead or b) when you eat." Delvin said.
His eyes turned cold and hard.
"No, no job is worth that."

"Worth what? Your honor, your dignity, or your self respect?" She asked. "And if you just can't find a job, move. It isn't that hard. You pack up what you want and you leave and find a new home."
She jumped ahead of him.
"Not eating and the river better be coming up quickly." She said.
