"Oh," Phyre said. All of May's friends seemed normal enough but most of them were killers. "Do you like your job?"

"I signed up for it, didn't I?" Rastus asked. "Yeah, I like it. Contracts pay alot more than the average tradesman. I make in one contract what the average joe makes in a month. Sometimes in a year. I also am careful. I can't look like I'm doing ok, cuz then the guard would be on to me. Well, not some of them, but the other half would be.."

"What do you mean only half the guard would be on you?" Phyre asked.

"The other half was on the guard during the last war. They dont' want that again. So they ignore it. If they catch the guy who did it, great. If not, that sucks. They've decided not to ever punish the group." Rastus said. "And the other half is alot like the first Captain Smith. And we don't want that."

"Captian Smith must have been extremely insane." Phyre said. "Most people are just trying to avoid more war than they already you have." He shuttered, there was a lot of death in this city.

"We just hit the war jackpot, didn't we?" Rastus said. "Granted it's not all bad. A war stimulates the economy since more people have to work. The army gets larger, more people have to take the jobs that the soliders once had. More people have jobs, more money gets spent."

Phyre nodded. "That makes sense. The cost of life is still very high though. With men dieing on both sides. Then if the soldiers are going off to war and dieing that leaves less reproduction." Phyre said.

"Not everyone is going off to war. And there are still more kids being born then there are people dying. And don't forget one of the most popular tatics when trying to take over a country." Rastus said.

Phyre frowned. "Prisoners?" Phyre asked. "I don't know how that would effect population growth though."

Rastus rolled his eyes.
"The most popular tactic in war is biological. The soliders from the oppostition are encouraged to go out and have children with the locals. That gives the enemy a greater claim to the area." Rastus said. "Unfortunately, this is why rape is so common during wars."

Phyre nodded. "Oh. I didn't know that," Phyre said.

"Not many people do, but it's true nonetheless. That's why populations will never decrease in war. War orphans will increase though, which is just as bad." Rastus said.

"Then orphanage's are over run by children and they live in worse and worse conditions as the numbers increase?" Phyre said. "No one really wants to take in an extra mouth to feed during war because of the smaller rations. Then after the war is over and soldiers come back the population increases more because of the young men coming back to start families."

"Yup. So for about a generation the city is overrun with kids. That's how it was after the last war and that's how it's going to be during this war." Rastus said. "I had the option of going off and fighting in the war, you know. I didn't, because I knew that I was needed here. Maybe I was wrong, but I'd rather stay here. Because I've killed Rassi invaders before. And I did it with more power and such in it. Because here, I can see what's happening and I can what I'm fighting for."

"Why couldn't you join the army?" Phyre asked. "Staying home would give any soldier more incentive to fight than any charm or other object that reminds them of home."
