"I'm running from people, obviously." She said. "They killed my mother and want to kill me. I'm in a ballgown because it was at a party where they killed her and tried to get me. I don't know if my father got out ok though."

"Around here it isn't so obvious, you lucky you didn't run into a bear," Delvin said. "I'm sorry. Why did they kill your mother? And you?"

"They called her a traitor." She said. "They called me that too. They said I helped her, even if I didn't know it. The people take treachery, even accidental treachery seriously where I'm from. And I ran."

"Oh, that would make most people run. I'm guessing that is how you stumbled into town square." Delvin said. "Did they have any grounds for the accusation?"

"I wouldn't know." Athena said. "She and I weren't close. I saw her once a day, maybe."

"So you were a daddy's girl?" Delvin asked with a smirk. "Or were you not close to either of them? I'm a momma's boy, but i didn't have much choice in that matter."

"You could call me that." Athena said, slowly. Daddy's girl? Was that what they called people like her now? Children whose fathers beat them?

"You don't sound to happy about that. What was you real relationship with you dad?" Delvin asked. The encampment may be small and passivises, but he had heard that tone in some voices before. None of them could be classified as a daddy's girl or boy. She probably wouldn't tell him, but depending on her reaction it would confirm it.

"Why should I tell you?" She asked. "You don't know me. You don't know anything about me."

"No i don't, which means i have to ask questions in order to get to know you. If you don't want to answer just say pass." Delvin said. She had also confirmed what he though, she had become defensive.

"You shouldn't bother. You said I could leave tomorrow and that's exactly what I intend to do." Athena said, coldly.

Delvin shrugged. "Okay." he said. He took his arm from around her shoulder and stood up. "I'll be down stairs if you need me. You really should finish your food."

Athena didn't eat, but she did get changed into the dress that Delvin had given her. She went to sleep. And she didn't wake up the next morning.

Delvin had stayed in Phyre's room that night. He didn't get much sleep though, his thoughts were everywhere. On Phyre and the outside world, on the new girl, on bear attacks, on his grandmother. He couldn't sleep. When he finally gave up on sleep he went on a run through the woods and got back between dawn and midday.
He went to check on Athena. "Brambles? You up yet?" he asked knocking softly on the door.

"Urg." She moaned. She felt hot and sweaty and her head was pounding. She shut her eyes tighter.
