It had been a hard five months. Food was low everywhere. Now Dody didn't bring them food, they gave her food. There were people starving in the streets in Kyyra, according to her. People had gotten into drugs just avoid the pain of reality. Amaya wished she had that luxury sometimes. The guys had really pulled the group together. She and Dante, well they had made up and started back up again. She and Jaysn didn't go to Rassel. They cancelled and sent someone else to go. The Imperials had captured Aldrick too. They thought that the Crescents would want to free him, so they set a trap. They were going to execute them and hope that he would be saved so they could capture the saviors. All the Crescents did come, since it was held outside the city. But they came to watch him die, since no one liked him.
Sonja was close to her due date, and was really pushing for Dody to find a way for Luke to get smuggled out of the city. But she knew it just wasn't possible. She had been working hard by rationing the food, montoring the sick, helping the widows and orphans. It kept her busy.
There seemed like there could be no possible end to this. The Crescents wouldn't ever surrender, and Captain was too insane and too proud to surrender.
Jaysn and Charlie seemed solid. It was a good relationship. He was a great guy and like a brother Amaya. And Dante joked about how Jaysn was probably his long lost sister. So it was working out.
Damion didn't bother Jay anymore. He had met Sonja's best friend Abigail. She was good for him. He helped when her grandmother died and when her Aunt Mae lost her mind. Apparently they were going out now.
Auntie wasn't doing well. The stress of this was taking a toll on her already fragile health. But she did the best she could and said that if any good came out of this, it was that people learned of their power.
Amaya was marching to the conference room. Like all the other meetings, this would discuss options that they had right now. But this meeting would discuss the options they had involving their survival. Almost all of the woodlands were gone. Those still alive were living in the base. It was cramped and crowded, and if someone got sick, half the base did too. It was bad.
She got in there, and everyone looked at her. By the looks of the crowd, it was not only their biggest meeting yet, it was also their saddest. Half the people who came to the first few had died. Those who had survived were weak. This was going to be the toughest meeting yet.
"I want to say first, that I love each and everyone of you. I love you all so so very much. But I have to say this. We want people to leave. We are forming an evacuation. Families are leaving. Elderly people are leaving, and orphaned children. Now the people in those categories have the option of staying if you are over the age of 16, have no children with you, and want to stay. I know that some of you have to stay. There is no other option. Like Sonja. She can't leave. Her family died and she has no other home, and can't start over either. Margarite can't leave, this is her home.
I would also like to say that if you are single, have no children, and no responsibilities besides being warriors for us, you can leave. Because if you stay, you have a good chance of dying. I hate to say it, but this could very well be you life or death choice. If you want to stay, and you are over 16, and don't have children, stand." Amaya said.
She waited. It took a few seconds, but then almost everyone stood. Young men, women, old men, fathers stood. Amaya decided that fathers could stay. It would give their children something to say, that their father wasn't a coward. Of course, those who leave aren't cowards, but it is nice to stay.
"To those of you leaving, when the war is over, come back. We want you to come back of course. But we want you alive too. We guarntee you safe passage tonight to a small city in Peloski, the country north of us. For those staying, I hope you don't regret it. Thank you soooooooo much." Amaya said. "Now, our next thing of business is scouting news. We sent some scouts out recently to see what the Imperials were doing in the forest. Jaysn has the report. Jaysn, please give your report."
Amaya sat down, her heart sinking to the floor.
